7 Internet Marketing Guerilla Tactics

7 WEB MARKETING GUERILLA TACTICS

Every Web marketing campaign should have at its base certain elements that must be present in order for the campaign to be effective.   In this article we’ll cover seven such Web marketing strategies that help get you on the map for no cost other than time and effort. They are by no means a complete solution to Web marketing, but they form a solid foundation and will add more value to your campaign than most other strategies you could use.

1 Keyword Rich Content

Make sure that the content on each page of our website is keyword rich.  Search engines watch for keywords within the page and use them as a ranking factor. When you create pages on your site, be sure to name the pages by using keywords so that the full URL of each page contains keywords.  For example: www.jax-works.com/1234.html  is not a good page name because it doesn’t contain keywords. However, www.jax-works.com/search -engine-optimization-the-woodlands.html is much stronger because search engines see the relevant phrase right there in the Web address of the page.

2 AddThis.com

Put the free button from www.addthis.com on every page of your site. This button invites your website visitors to bookmark your site on any of over 300 social bookmarking services, “Like” you on Facebook, or re-tweet your URL on their Twitter account. Each time they do, it creates an inbound link to your site that search engines value highly.

3 Free Comparison Shopping Engines

If you have products to sell, submit a data feed of your products to the good free comparison shopping engines on the web.  This takes some time and effort to figure out and set up, but it is one of the best sources of free traffic out there. It’s also one of the fastest ways to get your products listed in the shopping results section of search engines. Here are a few such shopping engines.

4  Free Directories

There are hundreds of free Web directories to which you can submit your site for a free listing. These directories usually list your site with a link. The more of these back-links you can build, the higher search engines will rank your website.  For a list of these directories, do a Google search using the phrase “list of web directories”. You’ll find sites that maintain lists of these free directories. Submitting to these directories takes about two minutes each and is a great way to build links to your site.

5 Social Media Presence

Set up social media accounts with links to your site. Here are some basics.

• Facebook – Create a fan page for your company, with links to your site in the Info tab, and

occasional links in wall posts.

• Twitter – Create a Twitter account with a link to your site in the profile. Include your URL

occasionally in relevant and useful tweets.

• YouTube – Create a YouTube channel with a link to your site in the profile.  Link to your site in the

descriptions of videos you post.

• LinkedIn – Set up a LinkedIn page for your company with links to your site.

6 Leverage Relationships

Work existing relationships to see if there are ways to get incoming links to your website. These can include trade associations (including the BBB, and Chamber of Commerce), partners, investors, vendors, sister companies, parent companies, friends, and more. You might even know board members or employees who run blogs and might be willing to drop a link to you.

7 Flatten Out Your Site

Google and other search engines like to see websites that are thoroughly cross-linked internally. The more links you have from the front page to other pages in your site, the more authority Google will assign those pages. Look for more ways to put more links from page to page within your site. Especially focus this effort on the front page.

There are dozens of things you still need to do to promote your website properly.  However, most of what remains takes specialized skills to execute well. If you have an interest in learning more about these additional strategies, please contact us using the request form at www.jax-works.com/contact-jax-works.html, email me at Yvonne@jax-works.com, or call  832-889-9242 for a free, no-obligation consultation on your website and a free website report.

20 Ways to Increase Your FaceBook “Likes”!

  1. Advertise on Facebook to get more “likes”. This is the quickest way to grow your fan base. The Supre fashion brand did this to obtain 40,000 fans quickly.
  2. Rotate your ads “DAILY”  people get tired of hearing the same thing in conversation so change your ad! Conversion (CTR) rates can drop by 50% after the first 24 hours. Do not “set and forget”
  3. Add Facebook Social Plugin Box to your Blog and Website (60% of my “likes” are achieved this way)
  4. Free exclusive video that can only be viewed if you like the page.
  5. Run a competition. Everyone likes a competition
  6. Make it obvious on a custom landing page by providing a big bold “Like our Page”
  7. Initially ask friends and family to like your page. A bit overdone but essential at the beginning
  8. Offer a free ebook to obtain a “like” (just like you should be doing for email subscriber acquisition)
  9. Post content from your blog to Facebook whenever you write a new post. Facebook users love receiving new content on Facebook without having to go looking for your blog. Treat Facebook as an extension of your blog.
  10. Provide enticing high resolution photos. Compelling photos that are appropriate for your target audience will keep them coming back and make them share and so drive more likes from their friends
  11. Ask questions regularly using Facebook’s native question app.
  12. Include a link to your Facebook page in your email signature
  13. Provide a compelling welcome video on your Facebook landing page
  14. Simple but often missed: Add a “follow us” on Facebook button near the top of your website and blog pages
  15. Create an incentivised “Like” page that gives people a reason to like your page.
  16. Include the Facebook like button on your email HTML template so that people can like your facebook page from the regular email newsletter
  17. Add a large custom banner to your blog and website asking to “Like
  18. Add a link to your Facebook page as one of your three LinkedIn website links that are part of your LinkedIn settings in your profile
  19. Add a newsworthy update that is relevant for your industry or market niche to your Facebook page every day
  20. Offer “Special” including discounts to Facebook fans. The majority of Facebook users “like” a page to obtain a discount

How have you increased your Facebook page “likes”?

Google’s War on Spam!

User Review Websites can be a Boon to Small Businesses

According to an internal analysis of small business search results more than 80 percent of results did not point to the websites of those businesses. Instead, they pointed to social network results and consumer reviews.

The businesses surveyed were those of restaurants, travel, legal, beauty, plumbing and automotive – all highly susceptible to consumer reviews. These businesses and similar consumer-facing companies need to be aware of where they stand in search results with their own websites, compared to the rankings of reviews and comments from social media users.

Consumer reviews are impacting the bottom line of our small business customers.

Increasingly, however, every business is being reviewed by consumers. Oftentimes the reviews and ratings might not even be justified. So, not only is it important to know where you stand on these sites but also to have resources ready to speak out (or type) on your behalf. That means recruiting brand advocates. Of course, the best way to do that is to provide quality experiences for your users and to respond quickly to any problems before they become viral hate campaigns.

Some obvious places to look for your small business reviews are social sites like Facebook, Twitter and Yelp.com, and Google Maps, Bing, Yahoo Local, City Search and Local.com. Below are a dozen more places where your business or products might be getting reviewed.

InsiderPages.com
These are rankings for the medical and health care field.  They also review restaurants, beauty-related sites and home and garden sites.

MerchantCircle.com
MerchantCircle focuses on promoting businesses by using online user reviews. Businesses can create their own local coupon book.

JudysBook.com
Judy’s Book provides review guides to users, such as “Top 10 Auto Mechanics” and so on.

AngiesList.com
Angie’s List is a paid service for consumers to get certified, unbiased reviews of local businesses. It is a large and trusted network, claiming more than one million members.

TripAdvisor.com
As the name suggest, TripAdvisor helps users filter travel destinations via user reviews. A must-know for travel businesses.

OpenTable.com
Because OpenTable.com allows users to make reservations immediately, good reviews on this site can help restaurants take advantage of the convenience factor.

BBB.org
The Better Business Bureau is a relative newcomer to the user review scene but its trusted reputation makes it a must-monitor for every business.

Buzzillions.com
Buzzillions’ focus is products — electronics, computers, sports equipment, clothing, etc. Manufacturers and retailers would be wise to research their products here.

Epinions.com
Part of the Shopping.com family, Epinions solicits reviews on just about anything a person can buy online — from autos to office supplies.

Wize.com
Wize reports “the best & worst products” by matching products based on consumers’ needs. The main focus is electronics and appliances.

PowerReviews.com
In tandem with Buzzillions, PowerReviews looks to connect consumers with reviews about the products they care about.

SiteJabber.com
SiteJabber provides reviews of websites as a whole. Obviously, every online property should make sure good things are being said about them, or find a brand advocate to get the ball rolling. They claim more than 450,000 people search websites for reviews every month.

(The above are excerpts from material originally printed in Website Magazine.)

Make sure you keep track about what people are saying about your company through researching the sites above that pertain to your business!

Final Day of Twitter!

The great thing about Twitter is that you can tweet from your mobile device and most people do. Twitter has seen an extreme amount of growth in the last year and more and more Twitter users are finding new ways to stay connected to Twitter 24/7. This means using our mobile devices to engage and participate on Twitter. Access via our mobile devices enables us to engage with others, even while we are out and about. All you need is your mobile phone and an application that allows you to tweet.

There are some individuals who prefer to tweet via SMS or using the mobile Twitter site and both of these are great mobile tweeting options, however others especially those new to Twitter prefer applications that are installed on their mobile devices.

tweet-caster

There are many applications available, but today I’m going to focus on the most popular for the iPhone, Blackberry, Android and Palm.

iPhone

Twitterific – One of the most popular Twitter applications for the iPhone.
TwitterFon – A personal favorite of many because of it’s simplifed navigation that allow a user to jump from on area to another.

Blackberry

UberTwitter – Gaining in popularity, but many complain of the drain it has on the battery.
Twitterberry – Most popular application for Blackberry users.

Android

Twidroid – Most popular full-featured Twitter application for the Android phone.

There is also Twidroid, Seemsic, Hootsuite, and a lot of people are using Tweetcaster (the little birdie is so cute!)
Choose your weapon (and your phone) for mobile tweeting.  I hope you liked my 10 Days of Twitter and can use all this information to begin connecting with people using Twitter.

Twitter Day 9!

When I’m talking to business owners and marketing directors about Twitter, I always here “I just don’t have the time.” Managing your social media takes time but there are many tools out there to make it easier.  When I post to my blog, this blog will automatically go to FaceBook, Linked In, and Twitter.  It’s great…I kill 3 birds (tweet?) with one stone!

If you can just commit 15 to 20 minutes to social media marketing, including using Twitter and Facebook you will begin to see the positive marketing impact it can have on your business.

Here are some tools that will make your life easier.

TweetDeck is your personal browser for staying in touch with what’s happening now, connecting you with your contacts across Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and more.

With TweetDeck anyone can tweet like a Pro. Customize your Twitter experience with columns, groups, saved searches and automatic updates helping you to effortlessly stay updated with the people and topics you care about. See what people are saying about you and join the conversation by tweeting, sharing photos, videos or links directly from TweetDeck. We like to think of it as air traffic control for Twitter.

Connect with your Facebook and MySpace friends directly from TweetDeck by updating your status, posting photos or videos, commenting, liking and groups your friends to make it easier to follow only those you really want to see what your friends are doing by creating columns for each of your groups of friends.

Search Engine Optimization Unmasked for CEOs!

If you’re like most other CEOs, the term “search engine optimization” will mean very little. Either that or it means expense!  But it doesn’t have to be that way… If you feel like you’re standing in a dark room handing money to strangers to get you in the search engines, then this article is for you.

This is an article written by a business owner for other business owners and CEOs. It explains Search Engine Optimization (or SEO) in layperson’s terms. It won’t make you an expert, but it will give you some insight into what you’re spending your money on, what you should be spending your money on, and just as importantly, what you shouldn’t.

But before launching straight into an explanation of SEO, let’s talk a bit about search engines. Approximately 75%-80% of website traffic comes through search engines. What’s more, research shows that most people don’t look beyond the first 2 pages of search results. This means if your website doesn’t rank in the first 2 pages of the major search engines, it’s only receiving 20% of its rightful traffic… and revenue. (And remember, being ranked number 1 when you search for your company name or web address doesn’t count. You need to rank highly for the words your customers use at search engines.)

The biggest concern for search engine companies like Google, Yahoo, etc., is finding content that will bring them more traffic (and thus more advertising revenue). They do this by using complex algorithms to determine whether a site is useful and should be included in their search results.

This is where SEO comes in.  SEO is the art of ranking in the search engines. Nothing more, nothing less.  Search engine optimization means creating your site such that the search engines consider it useful. The two main weapons in your arsenal are:

•    Keywords
•    Links to your site

KEYWORDS

Figure out what words your customers are looking for on the search engines, and use those words on your site. By frequently using keywords that are important to your customers, you tell the search engines what you do. These keywords are used in your copy and in the code behind the page. Generally speaking, the more you use the keywords, the more relevant you are to searches in that field.

Keywords in Your Copy

The use of keywords in your copy is easy to understand. But it’s not easy to do. You can’t just pepper your site with a meaningless array of words. The trick is using the most important keywords several times without compromising the readability of your copy. It’s a balance between writing for the search engines and writing for your reader.

TIP: If you find this too time consuming, a website copywriter can take care of it for you. And if you know your keywords already, it should cost you no more than normal web copy.

Keywords in Your HTML Code

The use of keywords in your HTML code is harder to understand, but it’s easier to do. There are four main places these keywords are used:

•    Keywords
•    Description
•    Alt
•    Title

TIP: When you hear people talking about meta tags, this is what they’re talking about. To see how meta tags are used in practice, go to Google and pretend you’re a customer. Search for something your customers would search for. e.g. If you’re in car audio, search for “car audio”. Click on the first couple of results to bring up their website. Right-click on the home page, and select “View Source”. You’ll see a whole lot of code. You can ignore most of it. What you’re looking for are the following…

meta name=”KEYWORDS” CONTENT=”keyword 1,keyword 2,keyword 3″

meta name=”DESCRIPTION” CONTENT=”Meaningful description of page using the main keywords”

img src=”filename.gif” alt=”Meaningful description of picture using the main keywords”

<title>The title of the page using the main keywords</title>

Take a look at the way the creators of the site have used keywords in these areas, and follow their lead. You already know they’re ranked highly, so chances are they’ve done a good job.

Enough to think about for today.  Tomorrow we’ll go on to link-building!

Why Directories are Important for Search Engine Optimization

Directories should play a major role in your search engine optimization efforts (well, at least the big and important ones) for the following reasons:

  • Listings within major directories provide “context” to search engines. For example, if your web site is listed in the Open Directory Project under the category Pets -> Weird Pets -> Blue Cats, search engines will assume your web site has something to do with blue cats. Your web site and pages will be indexed faster and might have a better ranking in search results for specific terms (in this case, “blue cats”).
  • Major directories (such as Yahoo! Directory, ODP, Jayde etc.) have high page ranks and as long as you obtain a non-reciprocal listing from them, paid or unpaid, your page rank will benefit greatly.
  • Major directories are often replicated by other web sites (think of ODP, with hundreds of copies) which means that a listing somewhere in such a major directory will cause listings in all replica sites, contributing towards your link popularity efforts and boosting page ranks.
  • The ODP (Open Directory Project) feeds results to Google, AOL, AltaVista, Lycos, Netscape – once again, a presence in ODP can get you quite far.

As with most good things in life, you need to make efforts to get into quality directories. Although detailed instructions on how to submit your web sites are always provided by the directories, there are certain aspects to consider before you start hunting for directories and submit your web sites:

  • Start with Yahoo! Directory and the Open Directory Project: being listed in the two of them is worth more than being listed in all other directories together! You will find soon enough that, unfortunately, being listed in these two is the hardest thing to do: Yahoo requires a $299 annual fee for regular web sites (only non-commercial sites qualify for a free listing) and $600 for adult sites, while ODP is free but you need A LOT of luck to make your way into it. ODP is so large yet is strictly human edited, which means the waiting time for a listing can extend to even years! Make your search engine optimization duty to submit your web site, but don’t get your hopes too high.
  • Religiously follow the submission guidelines provided by directories: read them as many times as you need to make sure you will not upset its editors by submitting your site the wrong way, with inaccuracies, the wrong description style, or to the wrong category.
  • Try to find niche directories if your web site’s content is suitable for that. For example, if your web site covers Marketing topics, focus your efforts into finding a Marketing-only directory (such as MarketingWHO.com) and submit your site there: search engines love links from sites relevant to yours!

You will probably come across many directories with paid inclusions: use your common sense to appreciate if it’s worth it or not. A good criteria is to check their Google Page Rank: if it’s at least 3 levels higher than your site’s Page Rank, it’s probably worth spending the money for the inclusion fee. However, do look for directories with a flat, one-time fee rather than recurring monthly or annual fees: you’ll end up spending less money!

In the end, remember a simple rule: if it’s too easy to get into a directory, it’s probably not worth the effort to get into it!

Search Engine Optimization Rules!

Consistency is the “key word” when it comes to Search Engine Optimization.  Following are important rules that relate to solid search engine rankings for a particular number of key phrases. This will apply to any type of website, on any industry you are targeting.

Search Engines Rank web pages, not web sites.
You should have unique Titles, Descriptions and Keywords in your pages (meta tags). Therefore, there should be only one page per keyword phrase you are targeting, highly focused on that phrase. You can also target as many related combinations of your phrase as searches are using to find it, as long as you have individual pages focused for them.

Your web site has to be relevant to searchers, not just the search engine.
One very important area of SEO is to be well-balanced. There many variables that matter when it comes to optimizing a site.  There is not a specific area where you should focus all your energies. Instead focus on achieving a Top 10 Position.  It is OK to be number 5 or number 3 in any given rank as long as your keyword is correct for your market… If you are in the 1st spot and you are clicked simply because that spot gets more clicks, are you really going to get more of whatever your site’s goal is just because you are the number 1?

Less is more, when it comes to targeted keywords.
On an average site, focus on 5-10 keywords. Build your entire site around these keywords. Remember to be relevant to searches using these keywords. You should  have one keyword for which your site is on the Top 10 (first page), then ten that are on secondary pages. Put those keywords in your Title, Description, and Keyword areas.

Build real content for people, not for machines.
It is said that “content is king”, and for a good reason. When two sites highly optimized in a particular industry compete for keywords, this is
when Search Engines evaluate for relevancy and  positioning, so keep your content relevant. Keep your content updated either by adding new (like having a blog), or by editing existing content. The relation between content and its freshness is a must.

Tell me who links to you, who you link to, and I will tell you who you are.
Yes, linking is that important in SEO. You must have incoming and outgoing links, but what really matters is that you must have quality links, and you must build them all naturally. Search Engines reward sites when their links are built steadily over time because that looks natural.

There you have it – the major rules of SEO:  Have meta tags reflect your keywords, make sure your content is relevant and of high quality, target only a few keywords, and continuously build links. Now get to work!
